Siberian Tiger Conservation & Breeding Center

Miankaleh National Preserved Area & Biosphere Reserve, Iran

Client: Department of Environment

Architect: Maziar Qaseminejad (Adab)

The Miankaleh Siberian Tiger Conservation Hub provides a high-consequence biological infrastructure for the reintroduction of the Panthera tigris altaica into the Caspian ecosystem. This facility serves as a premier center for breeding and rewilding, localizing international conservation standards to the site’s specific topographical and environmental constraints.

The design utilizes a "Minimum-Contact" spatial logic to mitigate risk, employing hybrid shifting corridors and gating systems. This behavioral engineering allows for precise management of breeding cycles and veterinary interventions with minimum human-animal proximity, ensuring staff safety and animal welfare.

Located 40km from municipal utilities, the site operates via a tri-hybrid autonomous power plant. Integrating Solar PV, a wind turbine, and diesel redundancy, the system guarantees 24/7 uptime for 4.8m reinforced containment barriers and critical life-support systems deep within the wildlife refuge (protected area).

The master plan incorporates a tiered biosecurity network, featuring a distal feline quarantine hub 80km away to prevent cross-contamination. Logistics are supported by a custom timber marine jetty on Gorgan Bay, providing a sustainable maritime alternative for heavy supply transport and emergency medical evacuation.

To address logistical food security, an onsite dedicated prey stabilization unit specifically engineered for the husbandry of donkeys, ensuring a consistent and controlled biomass supply for the apex predators. This sector is integrated with a specialized two-room veterinary clinic, providing localized medical oversight and bio-surveillance to maintain the health of the prey stock and minimize the risk of pathogen transmission to the tiger population.

Delivered under rigorous Construction Contract Administration (CCA), the project involved managing complex remote logistics and specialized structural engineering. Every phase ensured total compliance with international protocols established by a multidisciplinary committee of feline specialists and wildlife veterinarians.
